Hi! My name is Angelica. You may call me AP. I’m from northern Virginia. I first read Butler’s work 2 years ago. I started with Dawn from the Xenogenesis series. And, I felt in love with her work and I couldn’t stop reading! Most recently I finished Fledging. I look forward to sharing with everyone. And, learning more from everyone and Butler.
I’m Reignbow Rose and I’m from Ohio. I’d heard about Kindred but never felt like it was something I cared to read. Then I heard you speak about Octavia Butler on TikTok and the term ‘afrofuturist’ spoke to me so I started researching her. So far Kindred has me RAPT and I’m only early in the Fire chapter. I’m not fully sure why I’m here, but I’m glad your video found me and I’m excited about the course!
Hi, my name is Hope. I’m originally from Tanzania but spent most of my life in D.C. I was drawn to this course because my college didn’t offer an African American Literature class this semester, and I really wanted to explore Black writers' works. I started following you when you recommended reading Octavia Butler's work, and then I came across your posts recently where you expressed your willingness to teach. I knew I had to join the course. Thank you for sharing your knowledge. I’m genuinely excited and honored to be part of this journey.
Hey Hey! My is Myisha. I am originally from NYC but now reside in North Carolina. I discovered Octavia Butler at 14 in the library with the book Dawn. I completed the series and hunted down the Patternist series to read before their reprint years ago. Your TikTok inspired me to pick up her books again. I just finished Parable of the Sower. My 2nd time reading it but with fresh eyes this time. I love reading and I love discussions so I am looking forward to this class.
Greetings from Dallas, TX by way of Miami, FL. I'm Carire Donaldson. This will be my introduction to Butler's work and I'm excited to learn more about Afro-futurism and give science fiction a try.
Hi my name is Nora! I’m from upstate New York. I am hoping to get a deeper and more holistic understanding of Butlers work. So far I’ve read Kindred and Parable of the Sower, but I’m looking forward to reading more of her work!
I’m Deirdre, from Miami and I love how Octavia Butler portrays Black women as both powerful and vulnerable. She has some of the most realistic portrayals of black women in literature and when I read her works I feel both centered and seen.
Hello! My name is Yakeisha. I am from Shreveport, Louisiana. As someone who has studied English Literature and was an avid reader in my younger years, I took an interest in this course because I would love to get back into studying and dissecting works by famous black authors.
My name is Diana Jaffe and I’m from the suburbs of Chicago. I’ve been interested in reading Butler for some time and am excited to explore her work in the context of a class to gain more than what I can get on my own. I’m interested in learning Butler’s vision and how it’s relevant for what’s going on in the world today. Thank you for this opportunity.
Hello! I’m Rebecca and I’m from Ohio. I read Dawn in college for a Queer Studies class (I did not really understand the text at the time) and read Parable of the Sower in 2020 and consider it one of my favorite and most impactful reads, especially since so much was changing in my life and in the world at that time. I did not realize Parable was the middle of a journey until I saw your TikTok’s, so I’m excited to start from the beginning. It’s been almost 10 years since I was in school so the class format and discussion sounds exciting!
Hey, everyone! I’m Meghan from New Orleans, Louisiana. Octavia’s ability to take such creative and vast ideas and write them in a way that grounds the reader is what draws me to her work. When I read Butler, it feels like I’m transported to a world I’ve known all along, but I’m exploring again after being away for a long time.
Hi! I’m Kaira (Care-uh) from PA. I’ve been sporadically reading Butler since high school and I think that this course will help me to dive deeper into her comprehensive work.
Hello from NC!! My name is Stephanie and I’m a teacher. I first read Kindred in 2018 at the recommendation of a local Young Adult Sci-fi writer. I taught the book in an AP class and my students loved it. I’m looking forward to reading more of Butler’s work and joining in the conversation with this community.
I'm from Indianapolis, Indiana. I believe I have read all of Ms. Butler's works. I discovered her my senior year of high-school or freshman year of college. Circa 1992/93, I believe. That was Patternmaster. I was immediately hooked!
I reread Kindred when the television adaptation came out. It has probably been over 15 years since I've reread any of the other books/series. I'm very excited to in the company of others who appreciate and adore her work.
Hello my name is Dalia and I’m from NYC. I first read Parable of the Sower when I was around 16 years old. I picked it up from the bookstore based on the cover of a beautiful Black woman in the science fiction section which I had never seen before and I read it cover to cover multiple times. I also read the Patternist series a few years ago in a zoom book club with friends but I’m excited to reread them and know them more in depth. I’m very excited to learn from everyone and be part of the discussion.
Hello, my name is Tachi. I am originally from Newark, NJ but currently in Texas. I am an internal medicine physician that also loves critical thinking and literature. I aspire to write a novel and a pilot in the future. I miss being able to dissect literature, formulate a thesis, engage in discussions about the themes/motifs/foils to society that the work brought up. I’ve never explored any of Octavia’s works while I was in school and now that I’m presented with the opportunity, I’m jumping at the chance. I did, however, watched Kindred on Hulu with a friend and was completely taken aback by the whole thing. It was gruesome, raw, truthful, and honest. Most of all it kept me wondering.

I just finished the fire chapter and I'm totally hooked. I'm so worried about Dana.

Hi neighbor! I'm in St Tammany Parish if you would like to study together!
Hey! I actually live in Houston now, but I’d still like that. Virtual study sessions ftw! 👍🏾
