Dear Team,
I’m so excited to have you here as we dive into the groundbreaking work of one of the most influential writers in science fiction and Afrofuturism.
This space is more than just a course—it’s a community where we’ll explore Butler’s powerful storytelling, bold ideas, and her ability to reimagine identity, agency, and the future for Black people. Whether you’re new to Butler’s work or a longtime fan, I hope this course will deepen your appreciation and spark new ways of thinking about her legacy.
To get to know each other better, I’d love for you to introduce yourself! In the comments below, please share:
Your name.
Where you’re from.
What draws you to Butler’s work or what you’re hoping to explore in this course.
Let’s create a space where curiosity and imagination thrive—just as Butler would have wanted. I can’t wait to learn more about you and to begin this journey together.
Looking forward to your introductions!
Hi! My name is Angelica. You may call me AP. I’m from northern Virginia. I first read Butler’s work 2 years ago. I started with Dawn from the Xenogenesis series. And, I felt in love with her work and I couldn’t stop reading! Most recently I finished Fledging. I look forward to sharing with everyone. And, learning more from everyone and Butler.
I’m Reignbow Rose and I’m from Ohio. I’d heard about Kindred but never felt like it was something I cared to read. Then I heard you speak about Octavia Butler on TikTok and the term ‘afrofuturist’ spoke to me so I started researching her. So far Kindred has me RAPT and I’m only early in the Fire chapter. I’m not fully sure why I’m here, but I’m glad your video found me and I’m excited about the course!
